How to keep a wellness challenge alive past week two

The hardest part of any wellness challenge isn't starting it — it's week three, when the novelty is gone and only the habit is left. These five levers are what separate challenges that finish strong from the ones that fizzle.

1. Compete against yourself, not just others

Not everyone can be top of the leaderboard, but everyone can beat their own last week. A personal goal ring, a streak, and a personal best give every participant a game they can win — which is what keeps the middle of the pack engaged.

2. Reset the scoreboard weekly

A single running total means the early leaders coast and everyone else gives up. A weekly reset gives the whole group a fresh shot every Monday and keeps the standings alive to the end.

3. Make it social

People move for their team, not for a number. A community feed where members post wins, photos, and encouragement turns a solo activity into a shared one — and every post is a reminder to log your own steps.

4. Remove every excuse to skip a day

  • Logging should take seconds — a screenshot, not a form.
  • It should work on the phone in their pocket, installable like an app.
  • It should work whether they use a watch, a band, or just their phone.

5. Celebrate more than first place

Recognize the longest streak, the most improved, and the best comeback. When multiple people have something to win, far more people stay in.

The short version

Give people a personal game, reset it often, make it social, remove friction, and celebrate broadly. Yankee Step is built around exactly these levers — and it's free to start.
